The long-waited Android Bitcoin Core launched an Alpha Proof of Concept v0.68 last week. Expanding the Bitcoin full nodes to smart devices users is the project’s main purpose. This means every individual will be able to run a BTC full node on their Android, including mobile smart-phones, smart TVs, etc.
The idea behind it all
Using your cell phone’s comfort is the top priority behind Lawrence Nahum’s conception. His aim is to implement a completely secure network of nodes, validating transactions and blocks, applicable for all kind of blockchains – in this particular case the Bitcoin’s one. Complete nodes interact with others of the same origin to increase the security level. Both code and alpha versions are available in Github for modifications and usage. Why Android? Because it offers an easy storage expansion and low power consumption.
ABCore on Android
As an application, designed for Android, we consider it a personal node (on-the-go node). It’s going to connect to servers via mobile wallet. For the last two years, the ABCore’s been in an alpha testing mode. From now on, it will rely on Bitcoin’s network and further communicate as a full node. What developers advise here is simply using the app as your blockchain’s personal anchor, since it’s not a fully-functioning wallet.
Mechanism and requirements to run
A ‘block-only’ running mode is going to offer security to the users but less bandwidth. The ABCore can verify transactions and confirm blocks, regarding the fact it trust the full node peers’ information. You can run it in all types of electronics, using the Android OS. What you need to think of?
- Android OS version ‘Lollipop’ (versions 4.0.0 and up)
- Resistant battery
- 128 GB memory card
- 3G/4G networks aren’t advisable
You can download it from the official GitHub place or an apk file on FDroid. Anyway, you would need about 2GB or RAM and 256GB free space to allow your node to operate.
Conclusion
Take you old phone or tablet out of the wardrobe, since it’s time for reuse. In fact, you’re going to save some extra money avoiding high electricity bills. Interesting, isn’t it?
In a word, the ABCore app will keep you online 24/7, let you remotely control it because of his full-node similarity and of course its light weight. If you’re willing to support the network, you can now do it wherever you are at any time.
